Ride Details
This year’s Tour will take us on a ride through Civil and Revolutionary War history as we explore Virginia’s Piedmont and Coastal Plain. Starting near Virginia’s capital, Richmond, we’ll make our way through mellow forests and rolling farmland down to historic Charles City County and our final destination, Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.
General information about the Tour DaVita experience can be found in the Ride FAQ section. Campsite locations are listed on the Route page. More specific details about the route, itineraries and campsites will be covered our 2018 Travel Planner, coming later this summer.
Flight Planning

Arriving
You should arrive into the Richmond International Airport (RIC) between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. We will offer shuttles from the airport to the first campground. See Shuttles To and From the Airport below for details.

Departing
Your return flight should also be out of Richmond. We will provide shuttles from the last campground to RIC that will leave camp between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26. PLEASE NOTE: The first shuttle should arrive at the airport at approximately 6:30 a.m., so we do not advise booking a flight home that departs before 8 a.m.
Shuttles To and From the Airport
On Saturday, Sept. 22, shuttles will run from RIC to the first campground between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. If you absolutely cannot arrive into RIC before 9 p.m., please email asktheexpert@tourdavita.org for help arranging your travel to the first campground.
You should allow 45 minutes from the time your flight lands to the time you will board a shuttle. This will give you enough time to collect your luggage and sign in with a Red Shirt in the baggage claim area.

Shipping your bike
This means you are NOT bringing your bike with you on a plane or in a car, but shipping it to and from the Tour.
More detailed information on bike shipping will be posted closer to the ride date.
If you’ll be riding your own bike on the Tour, a stress-free option is to ship your bike in advance to our partner bike shop in Richmond, Virginia. Balance Bicycle Shop can receive and assemble your bike before the Tour, and disassemble, box and ship it home at the end. Total cost for both services is $100.
Before shipping your bike, call the shop directly (804-918-1175) and let them know you’re a Tour DaVita rider; their staff will arrange receipt of your shipment and ask you to pay for their services by credit card over the phone.

NOTE: You must provide a pre‐paid shipping label if you are having your bike shipped after the ride. You can obtain a pre‐paid shipping label by going to your local UPS, or you can look into shipping it via BikeFlights (bikeflights.com). The bike shop does not assume any liability for the shipment of bikes; it’s recommended to review the damage liability policies of your chosen shipping provider.

IMPORTANT: Your bike must arrive at Balance Bicycle Shop no later than Friday, September 14th, so that it can be assembled and ready for Backroads to collect in time for the Tour. The earlier they receive it, the better! Please be sure to clearly mark the outside of the box with your name and “Tour DaVita.” You are responsible for contacting Balance Bicycle Shop to confirm that they have received your bike in the time frame described.
